Dubai is a city known for its grandeur, innovation, and architectural masterpieces. This spirit of excellence is captured in the latest Dubai Map Project, a custom-designed artwork commissioned for The Lana, Dorchester Collection’s 5-star hotel. Designed by the renowned architecture firm Foster + Partners, the hotel sets new standards for luxury and design. This bespoke 140 x 90 cm laser-cut map seamlessly integrates art and geography, creating an ever-evolving visual experience for guests in the hotel lobby.
A Unique Hotel Wall Art Concept: The Interplay of Black and Gold

The goal of this project was to craft a one-of-a-kind map that reflects the city’s elegance and modernity while maintaining a rich artistic presence. The client envisioned an artwork that would not just display a map of the surrounding area but also feature an intriguing level of depth and detail.
To achieve this, we decided on a sophisticated black and gold color scheme, embodying luxury and timeless design. The map is more than just a depiction of Dubai; it is a carefully structured multi-layered piece, combining intricate patterns and depth to create a truly immersive experience.

The key feature of this piece is the dense pattern of square shapes, which forms the middle layer of the artwork. This layer serves as a semi-transparent veil over the gold background, allowing viewers to see the luminous gold details when viewed straight on. However, when seen from an angle, the black pattern dominates, subtly concealing the gold beneath. This interplay creates an artwork that is constantly changing based on the viewer’s perspective, making it an engaging and interactive focal point in the hotel.
The Process: Laser Cut Precision and Craftsmanship

Crafting a piece of this complexity requires meticulous attention to detail, from laser-cutting each element to achieving a flawless finish. Every layer of plywood is carefully sanded using fine-grit sandpaper, ensuring a smooth, refined surface free from any impurities or imperfections.
Once the sanding process is complete, the back layer of the map is painted black, with the visible water sections receiving special treatment. To achieve a deep, uniform black, I use Japanese liquid ink, known for its rich pigmentation and excellent coverage. Multiple layers are applied to ensure a consistent, high-quality finish.
Additionally, the edges of the map are painted black to maintain a cohesive, seamless appearance. After drying, the entire surface is sealed with a clear protective lacquer, preserving the ink’s vibrancy and safeguarding the artwork from physical damage. The lacquer adds a slight sheen, enhancing the overall aesthetic and durability of the piece.
An Ever-Evolving Object of Art

This map is designed not just to be a decorative object but a dynamic piece of interactive art. As guests walk through the hotel lobby, their perception of the artwork shifts—from a predominantly black panel at first glance to a dazzling golden revelation when viewed head-on. This interplay between light, perspective, and layers transforms the piece into something truly unique, inviting viewers to engage with it in a way that few traditional artworks can achieve.
By merging cutting-edge laser-cutting techniques with fine craftsmanship and premium materials, this Dubai Map Project stands as a symbol of both artistic ingenuity and the luxurious essence of The Lana, Dorchester Collection. It is more than just a map; it is a statement piece that embodies the grandeur and innovation of Dubai itself.
